Gardening with Native Plants

Landscape your garden with California native plants – reduce watering, maintenance. Learn how to select from our California natives, plants that are easy to grow and are long flowering, as well as those that will flower in the “off season” so there will always be colorful flowers in your garden. Feed hummingbirds, butterflies, and make excellent cut flowers for your house. We’ll also cover how to layout, plant, and maintain.

Most new Mah Jongg players lean toward choosing certain hands to play, limiting their options of winning. This class is for those who have recently taken a beginner course and would like to get more comfortable playing and choosing from the many different hands on the National Mah Jongg League card. In this holiday themed hands-on class you’ll explore techniques using gold leaf, glitter, die cutting, perfect pearls, simple watercolors and special settings for photocopying. Through stimulating creative writing and mixed media art we will begin the process of journaling. Film Noir, meaning Black Film, was an influential type of film that had its heyday from 1940-1958. Four classic films will be shown and the basic elements of Film Noir discussed: visual style, type of story, characters and mood. For those that joined us previously, this class features new titles.

Instructor: Joseph Longo worked as a film researcher for the Museum of Modern Art in New York and has taught college-level film and literature courses.

Create special decorative and functional pottery pieces with hand building. Instruction will be given in the pinch pot, coil and slab construction techniques and students will learn how to use household objects as molds for “hump” and “slump” construction. Final projects will be bisque fired, then painted with glaze in class before a final firing to make them shiny and functional!

Instructor: Anu Subramian has been a professional artist and instructor since 2004, selling her work locally, nationally and internationally.

Leatherworking 2
Previous experience is required for this opportunity to build on your leatherworking skills. Practice pattern making, leather molding, case construction, sewing and bonding, plus dyeing and finishing as you construct a small belt pouch or purse for small items. The skills in this class are scalable and can lead you on to larger and more complex projects.

Instructor: Howard Horwitz is an avid metalworker, woodworker and leatherworker. He specializes in a variety of leather holsters, sheathes, guitar straps, saddle bags, and is excited about passing on this quickly fading art.
